Memorise: “Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread” (Proverbs 20:13). Read: Proverbs 24:30-34 |
| Some people love to sleep. Sleep is really meant to refresh the body and prepare it for more work. But the way some indulge in it, it has become an end in itself. If you sleep too much, you abuse the purpose for which God created it. There are some students who are praying and fasting for good grades in their examination yet they cannot stay awake to burn the midnight oil. How then can you succeed? God is not a magician. Similarly, no magician or fetish practice can help you to pass without making the necessary sacrifice in studying. “Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread” (Proverbs 20:13). If you want to pass, study your books. If you desire to make good grades, then stay awake and study at night. If you desire to excel, then exceed the sacrifices and study habits of all your colleagues. Some brethren who are self-employed have allowed sleep to rob them of business opportunities. If you sleep when you should be working, even your customers will see you as unserious. Ever since you have been sleeping, what has come out of it? Awake today and arise to your responsibilities and you will prosper.
In Proverbs 13:4, being sluggish is another main cause of poverty. A sluggard is one who is very slow to take action. He is a brother to a procrastinator. Time is money as people say. If you cannot keep appointment you will lose opportunities for wealth creation. If you always go late to work, you will have several disappointments and financial downturns that could have been prevented. If you find it difficult to engage your hands in some work pending when your desired job or business materializes, you are a sluggard and not the type God can release His blessing on. If you are idle, you will be poor. Proverbs 19:15 says hunger is the reward for idleness. Engage your hands. Prayerfully find something you can do. If you have nothing to do, God has no blessing for you. He will only bless what you have laid your hands upon. He does not bless emptiness. What is in your hand? Are you idle or have you gainfully engaged your time and other resources for profit? |
