| OVERCOMING DEMONS OF LUST |
|
Memorise: “But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul” (Proverbs 6:32). Read: James 1:13-15 |
| A brother was preaching in a taxi one day when the cab stopped to pick a lady. As they continued the journey, the brother who sat at the front passenger’s seat continued to share the gospel. The lady interrupted by asking him a question. As he turned back to see the lady and to answer the question, suddenly he fell a strong and irresistible pull towards her. Ordinarily, there was nothing unique about her looks. But he could not help feeling the way he did. He struggled to bring the message to an end before he disembarked. But for the next two days, thoughts of the lady kept playing back as he kept hearing ‘Go after her. Go and search for her’. He was under the siege of demons of lust. “But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul” (Proverbs 6:32).
There are two broad types of sexual temptation: The regular and the intense. Yielding to either, amounts to the same offence. Today’s passage talks about the regular sexual temptation which erupts either out of lustful craving of one’s flesh or deliberate seduction by the opposite sex. That is, you are either initiating the temptation on yourself or somebody else is. In whichever case, the pull towards sin ranges from weak to strong. It is easy to overcome regular sexual temptations. Like Jesus, you can say, “It is written”, using scriptures such as Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 6:13; Ephesians 5:3, 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Proverbs 5:1-11; Proverbs 6:24-28. Take your mind off the source of temptation and focus it on Jesus. Also by meditating on the word and speaking in tongues. In the intense sexual temptation, it is a different ball game. Demons of lust and immorality are released en masse on a victim with the intention of pressurizing the fellow to sin. They do not leave immediately hence to overcome them you would need to be very’ persistent in your resistance (1 Peter 5:9). Whenever there is an overriding urge to sin, know that you are spiritually under a siege. Immediately go into praying in tongues and ask God for help from above. In addition, as you resist with the word, under such a siege, it may appear the demons are unrelenting. Continue to resist them. Avoid the source of that temptation. If it is a man or woman, keep a very safe distance from the fellow. Command the demons of lust attacking you to go and continue to plead the blood of Jesus on your mind and spirit. You can in addition command your body not to respond to lustful promptings. |
