Nehemiah 13:10 KJV summary
Why payment of tithes and offerings are important
It was a practice in the nation of Israel that tithes were collected and given to the Levites, who were the priests, and offerings were also collected for the singers.
Why payment of tithes and offerings is important
- This practice continues even after the Israelites returned from Babylon.
- However, there was a time that Nehemiah discovered that all the Levites and singers had abandoned the temple and returned to their occupation because they have not being giving tithe and offering – vs. 10-11 10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

- So, Nehemiah mobilised the people to bring tithes and offerings, and he brought back the Levites and singers to continue their duties in the house of God.
- Nehemiah also appointed honest people as the temple treasurer to keep the money and distribute it to the beneficiaries, thereby ensuring honesty and accountability. – vs.13, And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
