How to avoid rape
Read 2 Samuel 13

- Tamar, the sister of Absalom, David’s son, was raped by his half-brother, Amnon.
- Apart from showing the evil of polygamy, the story has lessons on how to avoid rape.
- What were the errors committed by Tamar?
- She was beautiful and should have been more vigilant of the risks of being sexually assaulted – vs 1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
- Being a virgin, she needed to avoid the opposite sex alone to guard her virginity. – vs 2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.
- Amnon trusted her half brother and became his prey. She should not have trusted any man apart from his blood brother and father.
- Tamar could have been more sensitive, vigilant, and watchful. When Amnon asked all men to leave his presence to be left alone with her, she could have raise alarm.
- If Tamar had some martial skills and self-defence tactics, maybe the stronger Amnon would not have been able to overpower her.
- The great lesson is that women should learn not to trust any man and be wary of potential sexual abuse.
