Lessons on Lot

1. In Genesis 14, we learned how several kings and nations conspired against Sodom and Gomorrah, where Lot (Abraham’s nephew) was living.
2. Nine kings and nations declared war against Sodom and Gomorrah, where Lot, who was a native of that nation, was held captive.
3. Fortunately for Lot, news got to Abraham, who was a native of another city, that his nephew was held captive.
4. Abraham mobilised his three hundred and eighteen servants and rescued his nephew and others.
5. The first lesson we learnt here is that:

The Character of Lot: rewriting the Narratives

• If you are in an evil company, you will eat from the evils that will befall the company.
• Lot had no business living in Sodom and Gomorrah, which was the headquarters of sexual perversion in the world.
• A child of God must watch the company he keeps. If you want to rent a house or stay in a hotel, be careful of where you stay so as not to partake in the divine punishment on the wicked.

6. The second lesson we can learn from this story is that:

• According to the saying ‘blood is thicker than water’, Lot was rescued by his uncle.
• Pray for love and unity among your blood relations.

7. The third lesson we can learn from this story is that:

• While we believe in God for our divine security, you have a part to play to ensure your personal security
• The Bible says Abraham had an army of three hundred and eighteen soldiers.
• Those soldiers were trained from birth in his house.
• Therefore, even though Abraham was a covenant child, he did not play with security issues.
• If Abraham had not had soldiers, Lot would not have been rescued from captivity.

8. The fourth lesson is to have a partner who can lift you when you are in your weakest position.
9. Finally, the overall lesson is that:

• If you pursue, you will overtake and recover all.
• If Abraham had not pursued, he would not have recovered from the enemies.
