| TONGUES AND INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES |
|
Memorise: “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues” (1 Corinthians 14:39). Read: 1 Corinthians 14:13-19 |
| “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:10). Two other vocal gifts the Holy Spirit gives to His children are diverse tongues and interpretation of tongues. These are supernatural utterances in unlearned languages. It has nothing to do with the linguistic prowess of the speaker. In most cases both the speaker and hearers of a tongue might not decipher the meaning of the words being spoken except there is someone in their midst who has the gift of interpretation of tongues. According to Mark 16:17, speaking in tongues is one of the signs that Jesus promised those who believe in Him. A distinction must be made here between speaking in an unknown tongue and diverse kinds of tongues. When you are born again and the Holy Spirit fills you up, there will be an overspill. The evidence that you have been baptized in the Holy Spirit is that you are given the supernatural ability to speak is in unknown tongue. That will become the official language with which your spirit man through your vocal cords, would communicate and exchange spiritual transactions with the Holy Spirit. Everyone who is genuinely baptized in the Holy Spirit has one language of the Spirit. Anyone who claims to have been baptized in the Holy Spirit but lacks this language obviously has something amiss. In the gift of diverse kinds of tongues, the Holy Spirit gives the chosen vessel the ability to speak in several languages as the Lord chooses and as the situation warrants. It is good to be able to speak in tongues but it is better to be able to interprete. It is usually a great spiritual pleasure when in a gathering as the Holy Spirit is moving, someone stands to give a message in tongues and another person arises to give the interpretation for the edification of the Church. 1 Corinthians 14:13 encourages you to request for the gift of interpretation of tongues because tongues help in private devotions between men and God. |
