Memorise: “And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart” (Luke 2:51). Read: Luke 2:41-52 |
| I believe stealing is an unacceptable behaviour in all cultures. In our culture, it is commonly said among Christians and non-Christians that anyone who steals has destroyed the name of the family. In those days in my village, there was an annual festival where those who had stolen in some families were identified and all kinds of rubbish were dumped at the front of their houses. Such families would be blacklisted as no go areas for anyone who intends to marry.
This corrective measure was so effective then that if you wanted to sell plantain or other items, you will simply place them by the roadside and attach a price tag on them and by the time you return in the evening, the items would be gone and your money would be there. But today, such values are no more upheld with the same seriousness. To many, stealing is not as bad as it used to be. Even ministers are stealing! If there is going to be an end to corruption, it must start with you. Another aspect of home training is that you are not expected to partake in gossips. It is believed that anyone who listens to gossip is idle. Another possibility is that the one who gossips about others to you, would equally gossip about you to others. Gossiping is a negative seed. If people are always gossiping about you, check yourself. It is possible you are only reaping the seeds of gossip you have sown. Idleness is not tolerated in a good home. In my village, if you are still sleeping by 7.00 am, you would be tagged a lazy fellow. How would you spend your day after wasting your morning? Did Jesus have home training? Yes He did. At the age of 12 he was already shaking professors with highly intelligent questions and posers. When His parents came in search of Him, they met Him doing His Father’s business. On their request, He followed them home and was subject to them. For the next 18 years, He went through home training. It is of acceptable conduct to say ‘Thank you’ whenever someone has done something good to you. Even God expects this too. But many people today take favours as a right. When you do them a charitable deed, it is ignored or taken as a normal event. |
