Qualities of Gideon
Read Judges 7
- He was the son of Joash, the Abiezrite of Israel.
- God appointed him a deliverer for the nation of Israel.
- He received a divine mandate to deliver Israel through Angel ministration and visitation.
- God described him as a man of valour.
- He came from a poor family, and he was the least in his father’s house.
- He constructed an altar to the Lord after an angelic encounter and named the altar Jehovah shalom – “the Lord is Peace”.
- He threw down the altar of Baal on divine instruction.
- These people nicknamed him Jerubaal, on the expectation that the god of Baal would fight against him for cutting down Baal’s altar.
- He was empowered by the Holy Spirit for his deliverance as
- Spoke to him with signs and wonders in dreams and visions.
- God used him to demonstrate his power, showing that by strength shall no man prevail.
- He defeated the Midianites with 300 men, a reduction of 32,000 men initially assembled by him.
- When God is with you, you do not need a crowd to defeat the enemy.
- Also, you did not need weapons to overcome the enemy. God used him to show the power in praise and worship for achieving victories.
- The army of Gideon blew trumpets, broke pitchers, and provoked the sword of the hand to defeat the Midianites. God fought for them, turned them against one another, instilled fear in them and caused the Midianites to flee before Gideon’s army.
- He died at a good old age.
