I agree. Read the Bible regularly and systematically. Jot down notes and questions to consider later. Consult commentaries, Bible dictionaries and atlases. But also sometimes step back and look at the big picture. Notice how David’s life contains elements of both romance and tragedy as he struggles to control his passions yet is described as a man after God’s own heart. Hear the pain in Jeremiah’s prayers as he preaches a message he wishes he had not be born to deliver, yet must because God compels him. The books of the Bible have stories to tell yet, despite diverse authors and times of composition, also a dominant theme of God’s redeeming of his people.
