Devotiona: Spiritual lukewarmness

Memorise: “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16).

Before, when a chorus is raised, you will arise and dance with all your heart. But today, during praise and worship you will ask yourself: What are they still doing? Why are they wasting time? They should hurry up so that the service can be brought to a close. Suddenly, you have become too big.

Your time has become too precious to you. Your target now is to hear the sermon and take your leave even before the end of the service. This shows your love for God has waxed cold. Your relationship with God is just plastic, dry and uneventful.

When you newly received Jesus, you gave much time to personal Bible study. You wanted to read through the Bible in as short time as possible. Today, your Bible stays on the shelf decorated with dust and spider web. Spiritual things no more excite you. Tithe paying is now a bore, so you pay it whenever you feel like.

What about evangelism? That has gone with the wind of carnality. You have gradually returned to your vomit. Your language is now the language of the world. You have dropped biblical standards for babylonian yardstick. Those days, if you missed a service, godly fear filled your heart.

You are so sorry that you were out of the presence of God. The love between you and God was so strong you could barely stay out of His presence. But now missing services mean nothing to you. Check your heart and feel your spiritual pulse.

In our passage, the Lord clearly stated His hatred for those who are neither cold nor hot. Jesus hates the lukewarm with a passion. In that passage, the Lord mentioned some characteristics of the lukewarm:

They are insensitive to spiritual needs. They judge their spiritual well being by physical, material or financial achievements. They live a life of compromise. They do everything possible to avoid being tagged “extremist.”

They want to keep friendship with the world and still remain with Christ. They are blinded to spiritual truths. The lukewarm Christian stands the risk of being spiritually detached as a branch from the Vine – the Lord Jesus and being sentenced to hell. How is the pentecostal fire in you?

Are you burning hot or waxing cold? Repent now and restitute your ways. Return to the Lord with a heart filled with godly sorrow. Return to your first love today!

Command spirits of lukewarmness and compromise to loose their hold over your life, family and church in Jesus name.
