strong>1 John 2 vs. 15-17:“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever”

ho do you love? Or whom do you set your affection? God or mammon? The Father or the devil? Earthly things or heavenly things? Do you love your Creator or the things He has created? Or better still do you love the things of this world more than God. The Bible says you cannot serve both God and Satan at the same time.
The world is full of various attractions- glamour, movies, money, position, power, fun, pleasures, and many more. The common denominator for all these attractions is that they are driven by the love of money and material acquisition. The Bible clearly preaches that the love of money is the root of all evils.
While we need money for our basic necessities and we should strive to have it to stay out of poverty and want, the compulsive desire to acquire material acquisition is evil.
In the passage quoted above in John2 vs.15-17, the Bible identifies three categories of love or lusts of worldly things. The first is the lust of the flesh; second, lusts of the eyes; and third, pride.
The lusts of the flesh refer to in ordinate desires after some worldly things just in order to satisfy our carnal desires. Examples of this include drunkenness, smoking, gluttony, and all forms of sexual perversion (fornication, adultery, homosexuality, Lesbianism).
Lust of the eyes is basically Covetousness (an inordinate desire to acquire various kinds of materials), but also includes the lusts for women. If you spend too much time watching movies, televisions programmes, cable televisions shows, or on aimless Internet browsing (in chat rooms, or visiting web sites) you are also guilty of the lusts of the eyes.
Pride refer to the grave for position, status, power, authority and influence. This may be political, spiritual, or professional. If you into politics merely for the sake of acquiring power and position and not to use political office to serve the people, they you are guilty of the lusts for Pride.
If you are a Christian Priest simply interested in acquiring titles, and not genuinely committed to flocking your sheep, then you are guilty of the lusts of the Pride. Also, if you’re just interested in holding a high office in your occupational or professional calling without a readiness to shoulder the responsibility of that position, you are guilty of the lusts of Pride.
Weigh yourself on a scale today, and consider your scales. Are you guilty of the lusts of the flesh, or eyes, or Pride? Judge yourself, and repent if you need to.
- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.“– Romans 3:23
- “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” –(1John 1:9)
Do you want to be reconciled with God, through Jesus the Lord and Saviour? Then say this simple prayer:
I believe Jesus Christ is the Messiah, and died on the Cross to pay the penalty for my sins and redeem me. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. I pray that His blood washes my sins away. I invite the Holy Spirit to rule my Life. I am born again in Jesus name.
