Your name and your destiny

1 Chronicles 4 vs. 9-10 – ⁹ And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. ¹⁰ And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

1. Names are not neutral.

Names in the Bible

1. In Genesis 25:24-26, a twin was born- Esau and Jacob. While Esau means red and hairy, Jacob means supplanter, deceiver, and fraudster. Right from the womb, Jacob schemed to overtake his elder brother Esau. The day of his birth revealed his unhealthy struggle.

John 1:42- And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).

2. Jesus changed the name of Peter to Cephas, which means stone. Peter later became the stone upon which the first Christian church was built (Read Acts of the Apostles 1-3). After the death and resurrection of Jesus, Peter exhibited stone-like attributes of ruggedness, hardness, and invincibility to lead other disciples in starting the church.

3. John whose surname was Mark, Acts 12:12, 12:25,15:37 was the young cousin of Barnabas, who caused much contention between Barnabas and Paul because John Mark had departed from them in Pamphylia (land of many people/races), and had not gone with them to the work (Acts 15:36-40).

According to Cruden’s Complete Concordance of the bible, the name Mark means indolent, the same as Marcus (Latin) from Marceo, to be languid, to be lazy. Little wonder, John Mark lazily departed and did not go with them to the work.
