Mistakes of King Rehoboam
1 Kings 12
- Rehoboam was the son of King Solomon, who inherited the Kingship of Israel after the death of his father.
- He rejected the advice of elders and vowed to continue to oppress the people.
- He rejected the plea of the people who pleaded for a more people-oriented policy.
- He played into the hands of Jeroboam, who had earlier led a rebellion against Solomon and fled to Egypt. Jeroboam led the people of Israel to rebel against Rehoboam. The Kingdom was divided into 11 tribes following Jeroboam, and only Judah following Rehoboam.
- The division of the kingdom was a divine judgement for Solomon’s idolatry – vs.15,24 15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lordspake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.
