Bible Verses on Vows
Read Judges 21

- Avoid making rash vows.
- Avoid making vows in a hurry.
- Do not be in a hurry to make vows to God or oaths to men. The situation may change, making it difficult of fulfil your vows.
- Some men of the Gibeah tribe of the Benjamin tribe committed sexual crimes, rapping a woman to death in the process.
- Israelites demanded that the offenders be handed over, but the Benjaminites refused.
- To avenge the death of the lady, the tribes of Israel made war against their brethren, trine of Benjamin.
- Before the commencement of Israel made two vows;
- None of them would give their daughters as wives to Benjamin, sealed by placing a curse on anyone who violates those vows.
- Any tribe that did not participate in the war of vengeance against Benjamin would be put to death.
- The war was eventually waged against Benjamin, and all the men were destroyed except the men who fled and hid in Mount Rimmon.
- Also, all men and women of Jabesh Gilead, the only tribe that did not follow them to the war front, were killed, except 400 virgins.
- After these incidents, the 11 tribes of Israelites regretted their vow as all men and women of the tribe of Benjamin had been killed except 600 men who hid in the mountain.
- This implies that Benjamin would have been cut off as a race because all their women had been killed in war, and their half-brothers had vowed not to give their daughters out as wives.
- At this point after the war, the 11 tribes of Israel regretted their vow.
- To address the anomaly and save the Benjamin tribe from eventual extinction, the 11 tribes undertook two steps;
- The 400 young virgin women survivors of the attack against the tribe of Jabesh Gilead were handed over to them, but a shortfall of 200 wives remained.
- The 200 Benjaminites were advised to kidnap 200 women from the daughters of Shiloh during the annual feast of dancing.
- The Israelites counsel this act of criminality and kidnapping to solve the problem created by their rash vow.
