Memorise: “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23). Read: Genesis 31:19, 30-35 |
| As a servant of God, you could place a curse. Apart from Joshua who placed a curse on Jericho, Deborah also did so. In Judges 4, God asked the children of Israel to come together to fight against their oppressors of 20 years. Some stubbornly refused to go and as a result Deborah placed a curse on them (Judges 5:23). One lesson we learn from this event is that whenever there is work to be done in God’s house we should not hide. Some Christians are great schemers: when it is time to contribute towards purchase of musical equipment or the building of the church, they will be missing. If the church needs cleaning, they will deliberately arrive late so others can clean up before they arrive. In their own eyes, they are wise and calculating. But whenever it is time to be anointed, ministered to, or request assistance of the church for welfare, or child-naming ceremonies, house dedications, etc. they are number one. Those who habitually abstain from working for God are inviting a curse upon themselves even when nobody pronounces it. Nobody can fool God. He is watching you. It is a dangerous thing to stay behind when God asks you to go and perform some tasks for Him. Apart from God or His representatives placing a curse, someone who has authority over you can pronounce a curse. For instance, if your husband pronounces a curse on you over a default, it will take effect. Let us take the example of Jacob. He was on the run with his family and flock from Median. Unknown to him his beloved wife Rachel had stolen her father’s idols. By the time his father-in-law, Laban caught up with them and accused them of stealing his idols, Jacob placed a curse saying whoever the idols were found with should not live. Laban checked their personal effects but did not see the idols, so he left. Rachel thought that was the end of the story. But the curse was in operation and took effect on her at childbirth and she died (Genesis 35:16-18). This means that Jacob was responsible for the death of Rachel. Be very careful of what you say concerning your loved ones. Some believers are mourning the deaths of their loved ones and looking out for some culprit whereas they are responsible for such deaths through careless and thoughtless use of curses. Be warned. |
