Bible commentary: Matthew 1

The theme of Matthew 1 is the genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ.

We can see that Jesus descended from a godly ancestry. He is the direct descendant of David and Abraham. May every ungodly ancestry in your lives or in your past be cut off in Jesus name

The Chapter also reflects the perfection of the Bible. All the ancestors of Jesus were recorded, 42 of them from Adam, even in those days when record keeping was poor. This shows the Bible is truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. See verses 1 and 42.

Jesus is also a direct descendant of King Solomon who was a son of an adulterous relationship between King David and Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. See verse 6. These shows God’s infinite mercy. Once you confess and repent, God forgive your past sins, no matter the magnitude.

Joseph did not come together with his espoused wife -Mary, before they married. Verse 18. If Joseph and Mary had indulged in pre-marital sex, they would have lost their historical and spiritual roles in the destiny of Jesus, the Saviour.

Many people are involved in sexual relationship outside marriage these days either in form of premarital sex or extra marital sex. Youths, if you are engaged to be married, emulate the example of Joseph, avoid coming together until your wedding night.

Teenagers, flee from sexual lusts. Keep yourself. Zip up. The Holy Spirit shall strengthen you in Jesus name.

The Bible describes Joseph as a ‘Just’ man. Verse 19. Could you be described as a just man or woman? Are you a just husband, wife, or child? May Holy Spirit sharpen you to become a just person in Jesus name

The greatest lesson or message of the chapter lies in the names of son of God: He was revealed as Jesus in Matthew 1 vs. 21 – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sinsand Emmanuel in Matthew 1 vs. 23 – Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The lessons in Mathew 1 vs 21 is that Names are important. Jesus fulfilled his name as a Saviour, Lord, and Messiah. What does your name mean? What names did you inherit from your parents or ancestors? Do they glorify God or Satan? Cut off every evil ancestry in Jesus name.

Mary is described as a Virgin. Verse 23. Do you still treasure your virginity? Would Mary have been chosen as the ‘mother’ of Jesus if she was not a virgin. If you have been sexually active before outside marriage, you can still practice secondary abstinence. May blood of Jesus blot out your past sins

Joseph was obedient to the word of God, he followed the instruction of the Angel of God that directed him to take Mary as his wife and name the new born baby Jesus. Verse 24. Many people have lost their blessings through disobedience to divine instructions. May God kill your disobedience in Jesus name

Jesus means Saviour, from sins. There is no founder of any religion that was foretold or proclaimed himself as being able to save man from his sins.

Emmanuel means God with us. As such, Jesus is God in human flesh.

Jesus is the only man that ever lived that did not inherit the sin of Adam which brought destruction to the world; though he is a descendant of Abraham, his ‘biological’ father was the Holy Ghost through which he was conceived. Joseph was really his adopted father because he never knew Mary.

Jesus can save man from sin because he was not born a sinner. No other religion could save from sin because their founders were born of flesh and blood, inherited sin and are sinful themselves.

The key lesson of Mathew 1 is that anytime you call on Jesus, you are calling God and Saviour.
