“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” —Proverbs 22:6
By now you must have heard the news
A 23 year old Nigerian, son of Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Mutallab, the immediate past Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria PLC is facing charges in United States over a foiled bid to blow up a plane in Detroit United States, Christmas day
Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab is an engineering student at University College London with suspected links to Al Qaeda
Media reports say that his father has alerted the US embassy in Nigeria about his fears that his son has been radicalised by Islamic extemists
The suspected terrorists father has condemned and distanced Umar’s action, but photos of the father and news on his afluent background continues to receive global media attention
What are the lessons parents can learn from this unfortunate incident?
- Unless you train your child in the path of righteousness, he will grow up to trouble your life. The Senior Muttalab does not support his child recent actions, which obviously is disturbing his peace now
- Have an eye on your child, even when he is not living with you. Thank God the Senior Muttalab knew early that his son had been wrongly radicalised and alerted the US embassy in Nigeria
- Watch where your child spend its teen years. The suspected terrorist was radicalised when he visited Yemen during his stay in London when he was schooling. If you have to send your child abroad, watch the friends he keeps there and keep an eye of new ideas he is picking up.
- Do not indulge your child. I am persuaded that the Junior Umar must have been showing strange mannerism while living with his parents in Nigeria at a youger age. Yet his parent still allowed him to stay off them schooling in London with all affluence. The lesson here is that if you notice that your child can not stand right he is on his own, then dont allow him to live on his own at a tender age
Lets pray like this: Satan shall not win the heart of my children in Jesus name
